Habitat Ventura launched a travel trailer program and began repairing homes for seniors and residents, becoming the first Habitat affiliate in the nation to undertake home repair work. After a major hurricane struck Florida, Habitat International reached out to Nelson for guidance on developing a home repair program. Now, 40 years later, Habitat Ventura County has conducted over 400 home repairs for our residents and neighbors. Meet some of the families who have received homed repairs from Habitat Ventura here.

Also, by the late 1980s, Virgil Nelson the founder of Habitat for Humanity of Ventura County, meets Charles Henderson, an Oak View resident who supplements a meager Social Security income by pushing a wheelbarrow of homegrown vegetables through the neighborhood. Habitat helps Henderson access his full Social Security benefits and secures a travel trailer on his property for safer housing.
