2000s

As Habitat Ventura expanded its work into Fillmore, Thousand Oaks, and Camarillo, the organization received a parcel of land in Piru large enough to accommodate 22 homes. The site, however, came with a critical challenge: land grading work estimated at $200,000, well beyond the organization’s means at the time. A season of winter storms brought heavy mud and debris to the area, requiring contractors to remove large amounts of soil. When one contractor heard that Habitat needed dirt, word spread. Soon contractors began delivering truckloads to the Habitat Ventura property, transforming the property into a buildable site.
