Meet Judy
This lady smiling at us is Judy. She uses a wheelchair and lives with her mom, Rose, in Moorpark. Up until this month, they lived in a home
with a range of issues that put their safety at risk and that didn’t accommodate for Judy’s wheelchair. Judy was unable to take a shower unless she had two people carrying her in, and even when she able to shower had a bad leak. The floor throughout the house was a shag carpet and maneuvering her wheelchair was not easy when she wanted to get around the house. Worst of all, she couldn’t use her own toilet by herself as the doorway to her bathroom was too narrow for her wheelchair.
But then, Judy and Rose found Habitat. Andy Shoemaker, Habitat’s Home Repair supervisor, along with Habitat volunteers brainstormed some ways that they could make Judy’s life safer and more secure in her home. They opened up her bathroom to her bedroom so that she had no problem accessing it in her wheelchair. They re-angled the toilet so that Judy could get to it with no problems. They tiled the shower to fix the leaks and installed grab bars. The house now has vinyl flooring throughout so that Judy’s wheelchair can maneuver around smoothly. Volunteers from the Navy Base and Saint Bonaventure High School also painted the exterior of the home and installed new windows.
Without support from Habitat’s volunteers, donors and the County of Ventura, these life-changing repairs would not have been possible. We hope you enjoy your home Judy!
