A veteran of two wars, Varela retired 22 years ago from Southern Pacific Milling after 39 years. In the past nine months, he has undergone two major operations. Varela and wife, Carmela, applied to Ventura County’s Habitat for Humanity’s Preserve a Home program for help, and were thrilled when their home was selected for a makeover.
Verizon’s Fiber Optic Internet & TV Service (FiOS) reached out to Habitat as partners on the Varelas’ project. “In an effort to give back to our customers, and influence change, we want to be sure that we help out on a local level to leave a community better than we found it,” said Collette Combre, Verizon FiOS special projects manager. In addition to providing Habitat with a $7,500 grant, Verizon FiOS employees signed up to do the work.
